Woman-owned Travel Business from Nicaragua Receives Inaugural ‘Adventure Angels Abundance’ Scholarship to Attend the Adventure Travel World Summit in Anchorage, Alaska

AA MexicoSeattle, Washington—Noelia Corrales, Owner of Colibri Spanish School in Matagalpa, Nicaragua, has been awarded the Adventure Angels Abundance Scholarship for this year’s Adventure Travel World Summit, to be held in Anchorage, Alaska this September 19-22. Powered by the Adventure Travel Association (ATTA), the ATWS is celebrating its 12th anniversary year in 2016 and Noelia Corrales will be joining the celebration. Her business – The Colibri Spanish School and Colibri Transformational Travel – was chosen to receive a complete package that includes airfare, ATWS attendance fees, hotel room at The Historic Anchorage Hotel, a 7 day Pre-Summit Adventure from Salmonberry Tours, a celebratory dinner at The Hotel Captain Cook and mentoring from the Adventure Angels Board members.

“The scholarship is a way of removing a limit for a female business owner from an emerging nation. Interconnecting with one another around the globe is a vivid way to gain support and encouragement, exchange ideas, and expand businesses. The vision is to propel women-owned travel companies and the goal is to empower globally engaged professionals to become financially viable and contribute to the economic growth of their communities. Women in any culture relish the freedom to experience new things,” said Adventure Angel Gaby de Vega.

The Adventure Angels Abundance scholarship program outlined certain prerequisites that the applicants had to fulfill. For example, the scholarship had to be awarded to a woman–owned adventure business based in an emerging market country. Finalists were selected on the basis of their leadership skills, service to their communities; and their spirit of adventure. Colibri Spanish School spoke about their newly integrated experiential travel services (Colibri Transformational Travel) within their existing educational programs and caught the attention of the organization. Corrales’ passionate vision quickly inspired the Adventure Angels to help her achieve her goals.

We were thrilled and humbled to learn about what women around the world are doing to advance adventure tourism and to support their communities, and especially the growth of other women.  Noelia’s story touched us deeply, brought us to tears, and made us proud to sponsor the scholarship.  She should be very proud to have been selected from such a group of strong, inspirational and determined women, remarked Judy Karwacki, chair of the Adventure Angels’ Abundance Scholarship committee.

Corrales was touched by the gift that was handed to her by The Adventure Angels. “On 2014, just when I was starting the Trasformational Travel area, I heard about the Summit in Ireland and I wished to be there but I couldn’t afford it, says Corrales. “Now, thanks to your wonderful work, my dream came true. You are not only giving me the economic opportunity, but also emotional support. You have been a strong engine for my company and an inspiration for me.”

“Angeles que abren puertas de vida! Your welcome word and warmth make me feel happy and help a lot to my self esteem and self confidence. Thank you so much for your support, your energies and all the doors you are open for me.” (sic)

“Revolution was what we asked delegates to pursue last fall in Puerto Varas, Chile — revolution to help change the world for the better through adventure travel,” said ATTA President Shannon Stowell. “The Adventure Angels answered that call by creating an opportunity for a woman-owned business in an emerging destination to have a chance to catapult their business.”

The Adventure Angels believe that women are tremendous, untapped investments that yield huge returns for entire communities and they want to assist women to have sustainable livelihoods by helping them develop their communication skills, self-confidence and fuel their motivation. Once women realize that they are powerful and can create and follow their own visions for their lives, they rise and energize others to do the same.

“Small opportunities are often the beginning of great enterprises,” said Judy Karwacki, chair of the Adventure Angels’ Abundance Scholarship committee. “The scholarship is the beginning of a pathway of opportunities to initiate change. By giving our peers the gift of flight and the chance to join leaders in adventure travel at the Summit we are contributing to the revolution.”
