Adventures in Beautiful Bacalar Mexico

Bacalar is a stunning destination in Mexico’s State of Quintana Roo, known for its famous “Lagoon of Seven Colors” (Laguna de Bacalar) and several Mayan sites. I first heard of Bacalar when a neighbor of mine moved there to teach sailing lessons. When I saw my first images of this place, I knew I had to visit, and I finally did so ahead of a conference I had in nearby Chetumal.

While traveling in your own style is so important, I do strongly recommend these memorable highlights from my trip:

Water Activities:

  • Take a boat tour on the lagoon to see the striking blue water colors ranging from turquoise to deep indigo, caused by varying depths and limestone bottom
  • Kayak or paddleboard across the crystal-clear waters, especially during sunrise (which I did) or sunset
  • Swim at the Black Cenote or Canal de los Piratas
  • Visit the Rapids (Los Rápidos), a natural shallow area where you can float in the current

Historical Sites:

  • Explore the Fort of San Felipe, an 18th-century fortress built to protect against pirate attacks, which now houses a museum about the region’s history
  • Visit ancient Mayan ruins nearby, including the archeological sites of Kohunlich and Dzibanche

Nature and Relaxation:

  • Relax at the Cenote Azul, one of the deepest cenotes in the region
  • Visit the Los Stromatolites, some of the oldest living organisms on Earth that form rock-like structures in the lagoon
  • Stay at one of the eco-lodges or waterfront hotels with private docks
  • Watch spectacular sunrises over the lagoon
  • Visit the Templo Madre Tierra and its surreal architecture in the jungle
  • Go birdwatching

Cultural Experiences:

  • Explore the town’s colonial center with its colorful buildings and local restaurants
  • Visit the local market to sample regional fruits and handicrafts
  • Try traditional seafood dishes at local restaurants
  • Take a cold plunge, get a massage, and eat nutritious food at Centro Holistico Akalki

Practical Information and Tips:

Eco-friendly tip: it’s best to avoid using regular sunscreen in the lagoon as it can damage the delicate ecosystem. Reef-safe sunscreen is recommended.

Getting there – Tulum or Chetumal airport are best. You can also fly in to Cancun.
